Side winds and aerodynamics

Image sources: Cautionary SignsOther Diamond Road SignsWarning sign
Skoda Fabia being a tall vehicle don't like side winds. You will feel that when wind speed is about 20 km/h and above. It's not a big thing, but you should be warned about that. Keep your arms on a steering wheel and if it's too tough just lower your speed.

Writing that, I found some aerodynamics articles.
Image source: The aerodynamics of the BMW M3 Coupé.
Automobile drag coefficient is a metric in automotive desing, lower values are better for fuel efficiency. For Skoda Fabia it is 0.31 (don't remember where I saw that) - within average modern automobile bounds - 0.30 and 0.35.

Sadash fuel station

Odometer: 3 458 km.
Second week I checking new fuel stations. Last one was Tapuz in Netanya.

Sadash station is second in Netnya's top 5 as FullTank reported. I almost ran out of fuel (but before warning light) and I went to check Sadash. The place looks very sad, not like you used to feel at Paz or other popular stations, it's placed in old industrial zone near weekend flea market and bunch of supermarkets.

-->

So I got 10.670 liter for 7.02 NIS per liter of 95 petrol.
I checked oil level as usual, turned on engine and... It was another car! More power. I felt that at the same moment I left the station. That was amazing difference. Now, when I think about it, it reminds me my drive test with Fabia - you just pushed in a seat when you press a gas. Now I understand the difference. I will keep an eye on it all next week. Most likely I will come back to Sadash ;-)

Also to note, when I started engine, RPM was about 900 with 1.2l/hour fuel consumption. I guess it's always learning what I filled there and setup engine to work according to it. Later, when I came home it was usual 700 RPM with 0.6-0.5 liter per hour.

On-board computer data (for Tapuz)
Average fuel consumption: 6.5 l/100km
Distance driven: 151.7 km
Average speed: 31 km/h
Driving time: 4 hours 50 minutes

Tapuz fuel station

Odometer: 3 306 km.

Checking FullTank site for stations in Netanya, I found that Tapuz in old industrial zone has max score 69. They marked with Competitive award, but not Quality. So anyway I went to check.

Filled with 10.181 liters for 6.85 NIS per liter of 95 petrol. Don't wanted for full tank because if the fuel goes wrong, you always can mix with something already known, like my favorite Paz. Btw, that Paz has only 30.25 score... So who knows what is better ;-)

Wax and first photo session

Waxing was very easy. You just follow the instructions.
Wash and dry vehicle. Shake well. Pour product onto sponge applicator. Spread a thin, even coat over entire vehicle. Allow product to dry to a haze (about 3-5 minutes). Fold the microfiber cloth, using one side to remove excess polish from the car's finish. Turn cloth over and lightly buff to a high gloss shine. Use was sparingly.
If you can't wax right after wash, it ok. But try to do that on same day - just run over with a bit of water, clean and dry. Start from the roof, finish anywhere. Break vehicle for logical parts like roof, back, left side, right and front. It was my first time waxing, I spent there about 2 hours :-) Next time it will be much faster.

LMG gearbox aggregate assignment, ratios, capacities

This is a gearbox from MQ200 series. It can transmit up to 200 Nm of torque (1.2 ltr./77 kW TSI engine is 175 Nm per RPM). The housing is manufactured from magnesium. The final drive ratios and the ratios of the individual gears can be matched to the power outputs of the various engines.

The following ratios are for my LMG (and MFX also) models. Check your vehicle sticker.

The Škoda engine plant in Mladá Boleslav has produced the four millionth MQ 200 transmission. The assembly unit is laid out for engines with a torque of up to 200 Nm and will be used in models of the brands Škoda, Audi, Seat, and VW. Škoda Auto currently manufactures about 2,600 MQ 200 units per day. Furthermore, the Czech location will also produce the new MQ 100 transmission for the future “New Small Family Vehicle” by the Volkswagen Group.

FullTank

Source: http://www.fulltank.co.il
Found today a new site for me - FullTank.
Here you can find where better to fill you car as by price and fuel quality. Here is full list of known stations with popularity indexes. Filters are fine, but main issue for me is that I can't sort by most important parameter - index :-( But you can do that in Excel or Google Spreadsheet with copy-paste (just make selection bit above and below the table) .

I have an idea to make a fuel station list with index above 50 for iGO navigation. That's also sounds good as I wanted to start coding Java - will be my homework.

FullTank Index depends on following:
1. Competitiveness - gas station that gives significant discounts on fuel, provides our customers with proper service benefits;
2. Convenience -  by examining the services and facilities at the station;
3. Fuel quality.

Google query for all places with "Quality Sign".

Turtle Wax - ICE Synthetic Liquid Wax kit

Odometer: 2 878 km.

My friend suggested me to buy liquid wax from Turtle Wax at ACE or AUTO DEPOT. So I went to ACE Netanya and bought this one for 90 NIS. It's Turtle Wax - ICE line Synthetic Liquid Wax kit with applicator and microfiber cloth. Gonna apply it next week after car wash. Wait for photos ;-) I think, that's a good starter kit because I never did wax before :-)

From the manual (p.151 - General Maintenance)

Washing the vehicle - Frequent washing protects your vehicle.
The best protection for your vehicle against harmful environmental influences is frequent washing and wax treatment. How often you should wash your vehicle depends on a wide range of factors, such as:
- Frequency of use;
- The parking situation (garage, below trees etc.);
- Season of the year;
- Weather conditions;
- Environmental influences.

The longer insect residues, bird droppings, tree sap, road and industrial dust, tar, soot particles, road salt and other aggressive deposits remain adhering to the paintwork of your vehicle, the more detrimental their destructive effect can be. High temperatures, such as those caused by intensive sun's rays, accentuate their caustic effect.

It may therefore be necessary, in certain circumstances, to wash the car once a week. It may also be sufficient, however, to wash the car once a month followed by appropriate wax treatment.
It is essential to also thoroughly wash the underside of your vehicle at the end of the winter road salting and gritting period.

Wax treatment
Good wax treatment is an effective way of protecting the paintwork from harmful environmental influences and minor mechanical damage.

The vehicle must be treated with a high-quality hard wax polish at the latest, when no more drops form on the clean paintwork.

A new layer of a high-quality hard wax polish can be applied to the clean bodywork after it has dried thoroughly. Even if you use a wax preserver regularly we still recommend that you treat the paintwork of the vehicle at least twice a year with hard wax.

Caution - Never apply wax to the windows.

Polishing
Polishing is only necessary if the paintwork of your vehicle has become unattractive and if it is no longer possible to achieve a gloss with wax preservers.

You must treat the paintwork with a wax preserver if the polish you use does not
contain any preserving elements.

We recommend using a preservative from Škoda genuine accessories offered by your Škoda dealer.

Caution
- You must not treat mat painted parts or plastic with polishing products or hard wax.
- Do not polish the paintwork of the vehicle in a dusty environment, otherwise the paintwork can be scratched.

Light alloy wheels
Regular care of light alloy wheels is necessary in order to retain their decorative appearance over long periods. It is particularly important to remove any road salt and brake abrasion from light alloy wheels every two weeks, otherwise the surface will suffer. Wash thoroughly and then treat the wheels with a protective product for light alloy wheels which does not contain any acidic components. You should provide the wheel hubs with a hard wax layer every three months. You must not use any products which cause abrasion when treating the wheel hubs. Any damage to the paint layer on the wheel hubs must be touched up immediately.

We recommend using a preservative from Škoda genuine accessories offered by your Škoda dealer.

WARNING
One should remember when cleaning the wheels that moisture, ice and road salt may adversely affect braking efficiency - risk of an accident!

Note
Severe layers of dirt on the wheels can also result in wheel imbalance. This may show itself in the form of a wheel vibration which is transmitted to the steering wheel which, in certain circumstances, can cause premature wear of the steering. This means it is necessary to remove the dirt.

Radio Milano fail

Odometer: 2 710 km.

This morning I got a call that wake me up. At 7:36 (usually I sleep until 9:00) called David from Radio Milano Champion Motor's (Israel's Skoda, Audi, VW and Seat) installation service partner. He was ready to come in 30 minutes (from Bnei Barak) to any place I want (home, work, etc) and install missing 4 rear speakers in my Fabia. I told him t recall at 9, when I can understand what he is talking about :-)

When I called back at 9:08 and asked what kind of speakers he is going to install and if he did that at least once on Skoda Fabia 2 - he started yelling "what are you think we doing here?" and "what a stupid questions do you ask?" and so on. I asked who can answer me that question, he said to talk with my Skoda agent - Stefan and dropped a call.

I called Skoda Netanya, but Stefan wasn't there and Tzahi (another agent) said that he will check with Radio Milano all information and will call back.

Thinking of customer service quality we got:
Radio Milano - huge fail. Recommendation - call customer before installation (in normal hours, not everyone works since 7 am) to insure details and schedule time.
Skoda - very good. WTF, Skoda? (see UPDATE-1).

I had enough experience when my leased cars were returned from certified garage services with scratches on plastic parts all over, that's why I asked David about his level of experience. I don't want that someone strange broke doors plastic, unknown wiring installation with unknown equipment. Will you live your own child to a babysitter that can't answer if she ever did that? I guess, no - unless you know her or by recommendation.

The only speakers Skoda should install is ABA700002 - Mounting kit for rear speakers and that what was told me in the garage.

Also, if you got rear parking sensors gift from Skoda, that was also installed at Radio Milano. This is a display of that, shows which of 4 sensors is active (switching between 4) and it's distance to the object first in meters and if more close in centimeters.

UPDATE-1 (2011-02-20)
It was more than a week ago. Still no calls from Skoda.

Prescribed types of fuel - unleaded petrol RON 98/95

Odometer: 2 630km.

Image source: Types of Fuel and Octane Ratings

I just figured out, that in Fabia and Roomster's SUPPLEMENT TO THE OWNER'S MANUAL Technical Changes 11/2010 prescribed fuel is 98!

Grades of petrol
Prescribed types of fuel - unleaded petrol RON 98/95
Use unleaded petrol 98 RON. You can also use unleaded RON 95. However some loss of power is to be expected when doing so.
If unleaded RON 98 or RON 95 is not available, you can refuel with unleaded RON 91 in an emergency. After refuelling, continue driving at medium engine speeds and minimum engine load. Driving at high engine speeds or heavy engine loads can lead to serious engine damage! Refuel with petrol with the specified octane number as often as possible.
Fuel with a lower octane number than RON 91 must not be used even in an emergency.
Otherwise you can cause serious engine damage!
Have no idea what is it related to. Probably it's most for TSI engines and they afraid detonation issues. But who says that in Israel 98 is good enought? I tryed it twice (both from same station, but...) and I feel like 95 is better. Will be glad to find other feedbacks. I'll check that also in Skoda Garage on next visit.

Oil type

This post is not relevant any more, please read explanations in following post.

Last Friday I was at Skoda specialist garage in Netanya and bought an extra oil. I didn't tell that when new car came to Israel garage, they drain out all factory-filled a high-grade oil and fill with local brand Delek that meets VW 502 00 standard. That is what Alex told me.

I posted oil label to one of forums to receive any feedbacks and people thinks that using VW 502 is very bad idea and it should be VW 504 with known brand (or 507). Just take a look on 502 vs 504 comparation and you will see why. You can check in Lubrizol Relative Performance Comparison Tool any other types too.

In the manual for Fabia (since Nov 2010, didn't checked earlier), Skoda recommends to use VW 504 only when you have flexible service intervals (QG1), for vehicles with fixed service intervals (QG2) - VW 502.

First refueling after price jump

Odometer: 2 327 km.

This week I was driving a lot, mostly because my friend from Russia came here in Israel for a while. Also now, price grew up and now you should pay 7.39 (was 7.27) NIS for full-service and 7.26 (was 7.14) NIS for self-service at Paz station in Netanya.

Real data
Refuel of 35.995 liters for 7.04 NIS per liter for 95 octan petrol.
And we got average fuel consumption: 6.35 l/100km or 15.74 km with 1 liter.

On-board computer data
Average fuel consumption: 6.2 l/100km
Distance driven: 566 km (566.5 on trip computer)
Average speed: 54 km/h
Driving time: 10 hours 33 minutes

Got an extra oil and garage check

Odometer: 2270 km.

I went today to Skoda Netanya's garage to get extra oil liter to keep in a car. Met there Alex, that presented me my Fabia 3 weeks ago. Btw, 3 weeks - that the first period you need to open bonnet and check oil level if you didn't that before.

It is normal for the engine to consume oil. The oil consumption may be as much as 0.5 l/1 000 km depending on your style of driving and the conditions under which you operate your vehicle. The oil consumption may be slightly higher than this during the first 5 000 kilometers.
So, as Alex told me, they drain Skoda's oil when it come to Israel and fill with Delek's Motorsynth 5W-40 and I bought a liter of those for 52 NIS.
This is what recommended for this petrol engine 1.2 TSI 77 kw and vehicles with fixed service intervals (QG2) - VW 502 00.

Also I jumped by to Stefan to check when rear speakers will arrive. He said next week, again ;-)
